1969 DE TOMASO MANGUSTA

In 1969, if you wanted a mid-engine sports car for the road, you had two choices, and both were Italian: the Lamborghini Miura or the De Tomaso Mangusta. While the Miura often is credited with the genesis of what we now call the supercar, the Mangusta was equally outrageous and deserves similar credit for introducing the world to a layout that up to this point was only found in cars designed for the racetrack. Wrapped in curvaceous bodywork designed by the great Giorgetto Giugiaro, already a prolific designer of stylish Italian automobiles of the period, the Mangusta was powered by a Ford 302 cubic inch/5.0 litre V8 engine generating 221 horsepower. Only 401 Mangustas were ever built between 1967 and 1971, and it is generally agreed that about 250 cars actually remain, making the Mangusta an extremely rare sight indeed.

Sold new to its first owner in dry state Arizona and has a total of two owners. This Mangusta is completely original, other than a repaint during the early part of its ownership and the level of care this automobile has received over the years is a testament to its current condition. The interior leather is still supple and the mouse hair fabric on the dashboard is still in excellent condition and the car is fitted with rare factory-installed air conditioning.

The engine and other mechanicals are in equally excellent condition, it has benefited from recent full service and rolling road dyno testing. Accompanying the car are its tools, spare original exhaust system and full EU registration.

Its first and original owner sold the car to a friend in the mid-1970s to fund a start-up business, he then had the opportunity to buy the car back in the early 1990s and had the car re-sprayed in its current yellow paintwork. A colour change from its original and ultra desirable Rosso Aurora Orange, a period classic, but an equally exciting colour combination.

The DeTomaso Mangusta is finally being recognised as the important and groundbreaking mid-engined supercar, taking its rightful place in history next to the other essential sports cars of its day and finding an example that has only been in the custody of 2 owners is rarely found.
